Around 1902 a company named Hamilton Beach patented the first electric vibrator for retail sale. In fact the vibrator was electrified before the vacuum cleaner or the iron which is surprising considering the era. The vibrator was a very popular item but use in the sex industry of the time made the sale of such an item undesirable to advertise in leading women's magazines has it had been until the 1920's.
